Our hearts fell to the ground Essay

Colin Calloway has done a masterful job of selecting and presenting an array of speeches, letters, documents, and drawings that tell compelling stories about the Plain Indians in the 1800’s. His introduction alone has just the right level of information and links basic themes and events to the documents presented in the text. In short, a model of how an introduction should be done. Colin Calloway’s intentions were to focus on the humanistic study of the Plain Indians views on how the West was lost. It provides us with the actual perspectives of Indian people who lived through those times of manifestation and assimilation. From the Lewis and Clark expedition to the building of railroads, he attempts to explain the traumatic changes of the Native Americans during the nineteenth century. He opens our eyes from what earlier historians whose work seems now outdated, preferring to rescue elements of their work. The narratives are divided into fourteen chapters, which supply historical document and secondary essays placing these documents within their historical context. Each chapter unfolds 1 OUR HEARTS FELL TO THE GROUND to show the tragedy the Plains Indian had to endure from the white settlers and their greed for land and prosperity. From the slaughter of whole tribes, the out break of the unseen killer, and the forced assimilation through the reservation systems were only a few explanations for why the Indians numbers dwindled in the 1800s. It was not until the middle of the twentieth century that the reality of their suffering showed up in history books. Any writings prior only portrayed the Native American as savages and rebellious people, almost to a romance climax. Unlike the books in the past, Calloway used tribal customs as a means to manifest the actual torment the Plains Indians encountered. The Native Americans were regarded as â€Å"people without history†, when in fact the Indians recorded their history by songs, dances, stories, legends, and visual records on buffalo robes known as winter counts. Calloway reveals to the reader the Ways the Native American used the winter counts as a mnemonic  device passed from one generation to another marked with pictographs that recorded noteworthy events in tribal life that took place each year. It was these customs that enabled 2 OUR HEARTS FELL TO THE GROUND elders to chronologically pass on their heritage to ensure the survival of their tribe. Calloway disclosed through speeches of the Native American that they were generally peaceful and friendly people who wanted peace and not war with the white man. Most speeches contained disagreement but acceptance of the white man ways, from the breaking of treaties to the inconceivable slaughter of their buffalo. The American Native hoping to maintain their hold on what little land and culture remained to them tried to accept the ways of their new neighbors. After reading this book I have a new perspective about the Native American. Unlike before, when I heard the word Indian I thought of them as savages of the Wild West for the most part. I now think of them as intelligent, prideful, and humane people who just wanted to be left alone to live the life they were accustomed to. Bottom line, if it was not for the white settlers forcing their way of life onto the Native Americans, they would not of reacted as they did. The settlers left them no choice!

When Was the Safety Pin Invented

The modern safety pin was the invention of Walter Hunt. A safety pin is is an object thats commonly used to fasten clothing (i.e. cloth diapers) together. The very first pins used for clothing date back to the Mycenaeans during the 14th century BCE and were called fibulae. Early Life Walter Hunt was born in in 1796 in upstate New York . and earned a degree in masonry. He worked as a farmer in the mill town of Lowville, New York, and his work involved designing more efficient machinery for the local mills. He received his first patent in 1826 after moving to New York City to work as a mechanic. Hunts other inventions included  a forerunner of the Winchester repeating rifle, a successful flax spinner, knife sharpener, streetcar bell, hard-coal-burning stove, artificial stone, road sweeping machinery, velocipedes, ice plows and mail making machinery. He is also known for inventing a commercially unsuccessful sewing machine. The Invention of the Safety Pin The safety pin was invented while Hunt was twisting a piece of wire and trying to think of something that would help him pay off a debt of fifteen dollars. He later sold his patent rights to the safety pin for four hundred dollars to the man that he owed the money to. On April 10, 1849,  Hunt was granted US patent #6,281 for his safety pin. Hunts pin was made from one piece of wire, which was coiled into a spring at one end and a separate clasp and point at the other end, allowing the point of the wire to be forced by the spring into the clasp. It was the first pin to have a clasp and spring action and Hunt claimed that it was designed to keep fingers safe from injury, hence the name. Hunts Sewing Machine In 1834, Hunt built Americas first sewing machine, which was also the first eye-pointed needle sewing machine. He later lost interest in patenting his sewing machine because he believed the invention would cause unemployment. Competing Sewing Machines The eye-pointed needle sewing machine was later reinvented by Elias Howe of Spencer, Massachusetts and patented by Howe in 1846. In both Hunts and Howes sewing machine, a curved eye-pointed needle passed the thread through the fabric in an arc motion. On the other side of the fabric a loop was created and a second thread carried by a shuttle running back and forth on a track passed through the loop, creating a lockstitch. Howes design was copied by Isaac Singer and others, which lead  to extensive patent litigation. A court battle in the 1850s showed conclusively that Howe was not the originator of the eye-pointed needle and credited Hunt with the invention. The court case was started by Howe against Singer, the then largest manufacturer of sewing machines. Singer disputed Howes patent rights by claiming that the invention was already some 20 years old and that Howe should not have been able to claim royalties for it. However, since Hunt had abandoned his sewing machine and not patented it, Howes patent was upheld by the courts in 1854. Isaac Singers machine was somewhat different. Its needle moved up and down, rather than sideways. And it was powered by a treadle rather than a hand crank. However, it used the same lockstitch process and a similar needle. Howe died in 1867, the year his patent expired.

Diversity refers to the unique attributes of individuals that can be incorporated into the organization for the improvement of its products and services (Konrad, Prasad & Pringle, 2006). Individuals from different backgrounds have different survival abilities that may be instrumental in the organization as it seeks to survive competition in the business environment. The individual approaches to survival in life may be useful to the company to ensure its continued survival. Different individual employees react differently to emotions and there is need to level their reactions so that they can avoid creating an environment that is not conducive for the employees. Therefore there is need for individuals to be equipped with emotional intelligence so that they can evaluate their emotions and learn to control them to ensure a ha rmonious relationship among the employees. Emotional intelligence is the ability of an individual to assess their feelings, understand them and avoid them if they are to negatively impact the environment (Schubert & Kravitz, 2000). Schubert & Kravitz (2000) state that emotional intelligence is very vital in promoting healthy relationships in the workplace as it depends on the feelings of the individual towards fellow employees and the whole organization. The evaluation of an individual feelings gives them the power to make decisions using both their analytical ability and intuition. The use of these two facilities in decision making, make an individual effective in responding to their duties and also making the right but hurried decisions in tough circumstances. Emotional intelligence also enables an individual to be able to deal with people who have got different needs in the workplace and the wider business environment. The emotional intelligence of individuals should be improved over time as the business environment changes. Some business aspects may be irritating to the employees and they should be able to express their feelings and views freely. Employees should also evaluate their emotions to ensure that they do not frustrate other employees in the workplace and this will ensure great effort in implementing teamwork duties. Kravitz and Schubert (2000), classifies emotional intelligence skills into five groups that are individual related skills, interaction skills, positive analysis skill, self control and adaptability skills. The company, so as to improve on emotional intelligence of their workforce, should administer a test that asks individuals questions that relate to their emotions and how they control them. The test aims at enabling an individual to evaluate their emotions and be true to themselves so as to determine how to deal with their emotions and not affect the activities of the company leading to losses. People who are aware of their emotions are aware of the dynamic environment surrounding them and they look for other means to solve the challenges that are brought about by change. Change involves uncertain circumstances that should be taken cautiously to avoid negative impacts in the company (Douglas, 2001). Individuals who are aware of their emotions are ready and willing to deal with chan ges in the environment. They always look for solutions to solve their problems and are more able to control their emotions to avoid negative repercussions. Operating environments for the organization become very volatile and the organization needs to be dynamic enough to handle the volatile situations otherwise they will lead to closure of the organization. By knowing the emotional reactions of individuals, the organization is able to prepare in advance by informing them on any forthcoming changes and individuals will now have the responsibility of controlling their emotions and adjusting to the new environment. Understanding one's emotions is very crucial especially in an environment where the employees are from different backgrounds (Konrad, Prasad & Pringle, 2006). Employee's backgrounds impose different beliefs in them and they strictly follow them. Other colleagues in the workplace should respect the cultures of other individuals and become aware of the values they uphold. The work site development plan should consider the values that the individual employees uphold and make sure that all the employees in the organization understand them so that they can check their reactions to the other employee's actions.
